You can learn a lot about a person by the gas station they swear by, and in Albuquerque that choice is basically a personality test. We've got spots where the restrooms are cleaner than my kitchen counter, and others where the pumps are a coin flip and the staff have perfected the art of the dismissive shrug.

I've spent way too much time circling the Big I in a rental car, chasing decent fuel and a bathroom that doesn't require a hazmat suit. From a Maverik with a cheeseburger that deserves actual respect to a Phillips 66 that makes you miss the graffiti-covered Speedway, here's where to fill up without losing your faith in humanity.

Highlights
Pumps often broken
Restrooms unavailable to public
Rundown and graffiti-covered
Poor customer service standards

You have to wonder what a gas station is for if not to pump gas and let you use the bathroom. Speedway fails on both counts, and with gusto. Half the pumps are out of order on any given day, and the ones that work feel like a gamble. The restrooms are locked, and the graffiti outside suggests they've been that way for a while. The staff seem to have mastered the art of the dismissive shrug. I filled up here once out of desperation and left feeling like I owed someone an apology. Skip it unless you enjoy disappointment.

Friendly, fast, self-serve checkout
Big food and drink variety
Safe, mostly clean inside
Quick stop when you're rushed
Watch prices—they run higher

Maverik does a lot right, and the self-serve checkout is genuinely brilliant when you're in a hurry. I zipped in and out in under two minutes, which is basically a miracle. The food and drink selection is huge, and the place feels safe and mostly clean. But here's the catch: the prices. They run noticeably higher than other spots in town. Maybe that's the cost of convenience. I paid nearly a dollar more per gallon than I would have two blocks away. It's a fine stop if you're rushed, but bring your reading glasses for the price tag.

Clean and welcoming mornings
Friendly staff early shifts
Fresh food consistently ready

Early mornings at this Maverik are a quiet pleasure. The place is clean, the lights are on, and the staff on the early shift are genuinely friendly. I stopped in at six a.m. for a breakfast sandwich and coffee, and both were fresh and ready. No long wait, no grumpy faces. The consistency is what wins me over. Every time I've come in the morning, it's the same welcoming vibe. It's not flashy, but it's dependable. That counts for a lot when you're running on caffeine and hope. I'd recommend this one for your pre-dawn pit stop.

Paying customers deserve respect

Spotless restrooms at a gas station. Let that sink in. This Maverik sets the bar with floors you could eat off, and the restrooms are genuinely impressive. There's even a security guard who keeps an eye on things, which adds to the sense of safety. The professional upkeep shows in every corner. Breakfast options are solid for a quick stop, and the whole place feels respectful of its paying customers. That respect goes both ways. I appreciate a place that treats me like I'm not just a wallet with a car. This is the gold standard for Albuquerque gas stations.

Leticia makes Mondays worth it
Friendly service beats the drive
Consistent stops, actual smiles
Bag requests require a crystal ball
Great fuel, questionable bag policy

Leticia makes Mondays bearable, and that's saying something. She remembers my order, cracks a joke, and genuinely seems to enjoy her job. The service is so friendly that I'll drive past other stations just to stop here. The fuel is great, and the pumps work every time. But there's a catch: the bag policy. I ask for a bag for my snacks, and the staff look at me like I've asked for the moon. It's a tiny frustration, but it's consistent. Great fuel, questionable bag policy. I keep coming back anyway, because a smile beats a paper sack any day.

Saturday: 12 AM–12 PM
Highlights
Top-tier detergent-rich gasoline
Clean engine performance boost
Uncompetitive slushie pricing
Confusing advertised drink costs
Poor customer service resolution

The gasoline at this Shell is genuinely top-tier. My engine runs noticeably smoother after a fill-up, which I didn't think was a real thing. The detergent-rich formula does what it promises. But the slushie pricing is a crime against humanity. I saw a sign for a 99-cent small, then got charged two dollars at the register. When I asked about it, the clerk shrugged and said the sign was outdated. No apology, no fix. It's a shame, because the gas is great. I'll keep buying fuel here, but I'm bringing my own drinks. The needless confusion just sours the whole experience.

Staff was super friendly
Convenient for quick stops
Plenty of fuel options
Easy access location

Love's is a truck stop that actually gets it right. The staff were super friendly from the second I walked in, and the place is set up for quick stops even if you're not hauling a rig. Plenty of fuel options, including diesel, and the pumps are fast. The location is easy to access, right off the main road, so you're not fighting traffic. I grabbed a coffee and hit the road without any hassle. It's not fancy, but it doesn't need to be. Reliable, clean enough, and welcoming. That's the whole package for a travel stop. I'd gladly stop here again.

Helpful staff like Johnny
Clean and phone-free environment
Great savings with nitro card
Solid cheeseburger with two cheeses
Worth the extra drive

Johnny is the kind of employee every gas station dreams of. He's helpful, friendly, and actually knows the products. The store is clean, and I appreciate that nobody's yelling into their phone while I'm trying to pay attention. The nitro card saves me real money, which makes the extra drive worth it. And the cheeseburger? Two cheeses, solid bun, and it tastes like something from an actual restaurant. I ate it in the car and had no regrets. This Maverik is a bit off the beaten path, but it's become my go-to for road trips. Johnny alone is worth the trip.

One-stop road convenience

TA Travel Center is the one-stop shop for road warriors. The facilities are clean, and there's plenty of parking, which is a luxury in this town. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the store is well-stocked with everything from snacks to phone chargers. I stopped in for a quick bite and ended up grabbing a few road essentials. The food selection is decent, and the restrooms are actually maintained. It's the kind of place where you can take care of business and get back on the road without drama. Reliable and convenient. That's all I can ask for.

Highlights
Good gas prices only
Pumps need power washing
Trash and debris constant
Management fails customers
Avoid at all costs

I want to say something nice about this Phillips 66, but the best I can offer is that the gas prices are decent. That's where the positives end. The pumps are grimy, covered in leftover residue that looks like it's been there for months. Trash and debris are everywhere, from the parking lot to the storefront. Management clearly doesn't care. I once asked about a broken pump, and the clerk just shrugged. Avoid this place. The savings on gas aren't worth the filth and frustration. You'll spend the difference on a car wash afterward anyway. I'd rather pay more and feel clean.

Friendly staff, Dee especially
Great local conversation
Traveler-worthy stop
Quick interstate access
Family-friendly atmosphere

Dee is the reason I'll come back to this Shell. She remembered my name on the second visit, which is more than most places manage. The conversation is easy, the kind you'd have with an old friend. It's right off the interstate, so it's perfect for travelers who need a quick, friendly stop. The atmosphere is family-friendly, with staff who actually seem happy to see you. I grabbed a coffee and a snack and felt like I'd made a small human connection. That's rare in a gas station. I hope they pay Dee well, because she's the whole reason this place works.

Sarah Smoot's constant hard work
Fast service, two registers
Clean store, happy crew

Circle K usually gets a bad rap, but this one bucks the trend. Sarah Smoot is everywhere at once, cleaning, restocking, and keeping the crew smiling. The service is fast, and they actually run two registers when it's busy. I never wait more than a minute, which sets a high bar. The store is clean, bright, and the happy crew makes a difference. It's a small thing, but a cheerful hello goes a long way after a long drive. This Circle K feels less like a chain and more like a neighborhood spot. I'll take it.
