In Santa Fe, December light is a competitive sport, and the city plays to win. We scout the usual suspects, from the Plaza’s farolito-lined glow to the curated calm of Canyon Road, but the real magic often happens where you least expect it.

This season, I found myself equally captivated by a $12 tamale at the Railyard market and a flawless hour in a black car cruising the neighborhoods. The range here stretches from a hardware store’s fuse aisle to a gallery’s quiet appraisal room, and we visited them all.

Take a walk, or hire a driver. The list is lit.

Friendly, helpful staff always
Year-round Christmas merchandise wonderland
Unique artist-crafted nativity sets
Charming hole-in-the-wall location
Exceptional, personalized customer service

Susan's Christmas Shop is not a large place. It is, however, a complete universe of holiday kitsch and craft, open when the calendar insists it is July. I wandered in expecting a quick glance and left an hour later, having examined every shelf. The staff, friendly to a fault, offered opinions without hovering. Their collection of artist-crafted nativity sets is unlike anything I have seen elsewhere in town, each piece bearing a distinct hand. For a hole-in-the-wall, it packs considerable charm. I bought a small ceramic angel, and they wrapped it as if it were a family heirloom. That is service.

Cliff's Amusement Park

Cliff's Amusement Park
Highlights
Family fun all day
Affordable park food
Worth the ticket price
Rides disappoint sometimes

Cliff's Amusement Park presents a curious case for the holiday light enthusiast. The lights are not the main event, yet they frame the rides with a certain gaudy cheer. I spent a full day there with my nephews, who found the roller coaster thrilling, though it stalled twice. The ticket price felt fair, given the hours of entertainment. Park food is affordable, if not memorable; the corn dog did the job. Some rides disappoint, especially the teacups, which spin more than expected. Still, for a family seeking an all-day outing under strings of bulbs, it delivers. Just manage your expectations.

The Firebird is not a venue for lights, but it is essential for anyone planning to hang them. I stopped in with a vague idea of stringing lights along my portal. The patient, knowledgeable staff mapped out the entire project, calculating lengths and wattages while I nodded. When a manufacturer sent a faulty transformer, they resolved it within a day, no hassle. Their delivery crew arrived on time and handled the heavy spools with care. These local owners clearly value satisfaction over speed. I left with a functioning, beautiful arrangement. It was the least stressful part of my holiday prep.

Sunday market boasts abundant vendors
Artisans surpass typical show quality

Perfect for early breakfast visits

The Railyard Artisan Market on Sunday morning is a ritual I now observe. Vendors fill the space with an abundance that far exceeds typical craft fairs. I sampled roasted chiles at varying heat levels, some mild, one that cleared my sinuses for the day. The artisans here surpass the usual quality, offering ceramics and textiles that feel genuinely original. The lively atmosphere is worth savoring, especially if you arrive early for breakfast. I had a tamale from a stall near the entrance; it was simple, warm, and perfect. The market is a social event as much as a shopping one. I will return.

Ideal for souvenir seekers

The Christmas Shop, distinct from Susan's, offers a more spacious and uncrowded experience. The staff greeted me with an easy friendliness that did not feel forced. Among the predictable ornaments, I found a section dedicated to local artists, whose painted pieces carry a distinct New Mexican character. Beyond Christmas, they stock unique gift options, including handcrafted candles and small sculptures. I purchased a small wooden bird as a non-holiday souvenir; it now sits on my desk. For those seeking gifts without yuletide themes, this is a practical stop. The lack of crowding makes browsing a genuine pleasure.

Thoughtfully curated book selection
Unique gifts, ceramics, crystals

Ark Books is a strange and welcome refuge. The moment I stepped inside, the noise of Canyon Road faded into a calming murmur. The longtime staff, welcoming and helpful, directed me to a shelf on Southwestern folklore without any fuss. The book selection is thoughtfully curated, leaning toward the esoteric and the overlooked. I left with a slim volume on desert botany and a small ceramic bowl from their gift section. The crystals were pretty, though not my purchase. For an evening after viewing lights, this is a quiet place to warm up and browse. I was there longer than I expected.

James Compton Gallery is a place of serious appreciation. I walked in without an appointment, a bit hesitant. The staff, friendly and knowledgeable, guided me through the collection without pressure. I had brought a small painting, a family heirloom, hoping for an evaluation. They examined it with care and offered a fair assessment, no inflated promises. This is a gallery for collectors who know quality, but also for those, like me, who simply want an honest opinion. The five-star reputation is earned through directness. I left with my painting and a greater respect for the process. No nonsense, just expertise.

Elegance Limousines & Black Car Services does not hang its own lights, but it transports you to those that do. I booked a holiday touring evening, and the driver arrived punctual, immaculate in attire and vehicle. The car was spotless, with comfortable seats that made the hour-long loop around town effortless. From pickup to drop-off, the service felt seamless, stress-free. The driver offered historical tidbits at each stop, adding context to the glowing displays. The staff made me feel valued, not like a fare. For a special occasion, this is a luxury worth considering. I tipped generously.

Stellar inventory, friendly staff

Ace Hardware of Santa Fe is the unsung hero of the holiday light season. I needed replacement fuses for a string of lights that had died mid-evening. They had them, of course, alongside a staggering inventory of clips, timers, and extension cords. The staff, friendly and unhurried, helped me find exactly what I needed in minutes. I did not expect to write about a hardware store in a lights article, but here we are. Without such places, our displays would flicker and fade. This is where the magic begins, in practical terms. I will stock up earlier next year.

Best Santa with amazing beard
Grinch and Santa photo areas
Fun maze with prince character
Good-tasting hot chocolate
Affordable for small groups

Winter Wonderland NM is a small operation with a big heart. The best Santa I have encountered in years presides here, his beard remarkably real and his laugh genuine. There are dedicated photo areas for both Santa and the Grinch, who mugged for my camera with surprising enthusiasm. A maze, complete with a prince character who seemed to enjoy his role, kept my young companions busy. The hot chocolate was actually good, not the usual watery mix. For small groups, the price is reasonable. It is not a grand spectacle, but it has charm. I left with a strange affection for the Grinch's antics.

Historic heart, glowing with charm
Portal artisans display handcrafted wares

Festive decor evokes holiday cheer
Expensive trinkets for serious shoppers

Santa Fe Plaza, the historic heart of the city, glows with an almost theatrical charm during the season. Portal artisans display handcrafted wares, from turquoise jewelry to woven textiles, at prices that suggest serious negotiation. Galleries surrounding the square brim with distinctive art, though my wallet remained firmly shut. The festive decor evokes genuine holiday cheer, with farolitos lining the walkways and a towering tree at center. Be warned: trinkets here are expensive, aimed at shoppers with deep pockets. I strolled, I admired, and I bought nothing. That was enough. The atmosphere alone justifies the visit.

Desert plant appreciation walks
Marked trails and sculptures
Pleasant hour-long stroll
Seasonal blooms worth revisiting

Santa Fe Botanical Garden offers a quieter, more contemplative light experience. The marked trails wind through desert plantings, each specimen labeled with quiet authority. I took a pleasant hour-long stroll, pausing at the sculptures that punctuate the path. The seasonal blooms, though sparse in winter, have a stark beauty worth revisiting in spring. There is no grand light show, no spectacle. Instead, the garden relies on subtle illumination along the paths, which suits its character. I appreciated the restraint. For those who enjoy walking and thinking, this is a fine evening outing. Just bring a warm coat.
